Wood House – Auroville

This post shows photos of the house – almost 12 months since the main construction stopped. Still, plenty of things are missing (decent furniture, rain gutters, landscaping, some screens for heavy rain and some screen for next year’s FIFA worldcup … there can always be more) … Lessons have been learned, mistakes accepted (building in the climate of tropical Auroville is a challenge for sure). If we would do the same again, we could probably save a few lakhs and would do some things different but … everyone loves the house, the cats, the kids, the grown-ups 🙂

A corner detail: Precast concrete work, steel clamps, wooden columns, plywood painted, mesh, roof …

And the foundation detail: the house rests on 14 of these footings, each with a pool of water (all interconnected) to protect from snakes, rodents, termites, ants …

Earth, stone, wood, earth, color, air, metal, nature …

The entrance –  artfully enriched by the kids 🙂

The entrance platform … nicely protected by the large overhang this has become a beautiful space to hang out: be it in the daytime shade or in the night under the stars next to a small fire made of the “waste” wood from the construction.

An old teak door makes the entrance.
